Gaspereau Press Sells U.S. Rights

Gaspereau Press is pleased to announce the sale of U.S. rights for Robert Bringhurst’s The Tree of Meaning to publishers Shoemaker & Hoard. The sale was completed in March, with the publication of the American edition tentatively scheduled for spring 2008. Gaspereau Press has previously negotiated the sale of rights for both Portuguese and Italian editions of Bringhurst’s The Solid Form of Language (GP, 2004), to Edições Rosari of São Paulo and Edizioni Sylvestre Bonnard of Milan, respectively.

Shoemaker & Hoard is a traditional, author-driven publishing house devoted to literary work in finely made editions. Authors include Wendell Berry, Guy Davenport, Robert Hass and Gary Snyder. Publisher Jack Shoemaker was also the cofounder, editor and publisher of two significant independent publishers, North Point Press and Counterpoint Press. Shoemaker & Hoard is based in Emeryville, California.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Spanning a decade of lecturing, The Tree of Meaning gathers thirteen talks given by internationally renowned poet, linguist and typographer Robert Bringhurst. The collection is remarkable both for the cohesion of its author’s ideas and for the sheer range of perspectives and examples of cultures both human and non. These talks draw together an active and intimate study of art, literature, language, poetry, vocation, thinking, meaning, wilderness and natural history. Bringhurst approaches each with an ecologically conscious, compassionate spirit and an enthusiastic interest in the world around him.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Robert Bringhurst has published over a dozen books of poetry, including The Calling: Selected Poems 1970–1995, and is the author of The Elements of Typographic Style, which has become one of the most influential contemporary texts on typographic design and has been translated into ten languages. Bringhurst is also known for his translations of the works of the great Haida myth tellers, notably Ghandl’s Nine Visits to the Mythworld, which was shortlisted for the inaugural Griffin Poetry Prize in 2001. His recent publications include Ursa Major (GP, 2003) and The Solid Form of Language (GP, 2004). A second collection of talks and meditations, Everywhere Being is Dancing, will be published by Gaspereau Press this fall. Bringhurst lives on Quadra Island off the British Columbia coast.
